What You Need to Know About Dyed Mulch

Dyed mulch is one of our most popular products at Gaston Mulch and Soil, and it can be a beautiful addition to any landscaping project. To help aid in any decisions on which landscaping material you may decide to go with, we’ve compiled a common list of questions about dyed mulch and have answered them here.

How Is Dyed Mulch Made?

Our dyed mulch is made up of natural, recycled pine or hardwood. We use dry blended pigments made from natural sources like iron oxide (for red) and carbon (for black and brown).

Our wood chips and mulch are rolled in the pigment turning them red, brown, black, or gold. This gives them a rich color and helps them last longer than natural mulch.

Is Dyed Mulch Safe?

While our dyed mulch is safe for your family and for your garden, you do have to be careful about where you source your mulch from. Some dyed mulches are made from construction materials and treated wood.

Our dyed mulch is safe and poses no real threat to humans, pets, or the environment.

Treated wood before 2003 can contain traces of arsenic that can be harmful to your pets and soil. While that wood isn’t used in construction materials, sometimes it is recycled and turned into mulch. Be careful about the quality of mulch you buy and know where the wood came from.

Will Dyed Mulch Hurt Your Plants?

While dyed mulch won’t hurt your plants, it breaks down much slower than natural mulches likes pine needles, pine bark, shredded mulch, and cypress mulch. In an effort to break down the mulch, your soil will use extra nitrogen, which can be beneficial to your soil.

If you’re planning on putting mulch in a garden, consider adding a nitrogen-based fertilizer to your gardening routine or using a 100% natural product like cypress blend mulch to keep your plants happy and healthy.

The Benefits of Dyed Mulch
